Vienna International Airport (VIE)
Airport Information
(Vienna, Austria)
A busy two-terminal facility that provides an essential gateway into and out of the capital city of Austria, Vienna International Airport (VIE) is the country's largest and most significant airport. Located around 16 km / 10 miles to the south-east of the city centre, Vienna Airport is close to Ebergassing, Fischamend, Himberg, Mannswörth and Schwechat, often going by the alternative name of Schwechat Airport.
Vienna Airport serves flights to a vast number of international destinations, as well as to a variety of domestic cities, with the main airlines including Air Berlin, Austrian Airlines, Austrian Arrows, Lufthansa, Niki and SkyEurope. Currently in excess of 20 million passengers pass through the terminal each year, although this figure is set to rise sharply following the completion of the new SKYLINK terminal.
Public transport at Vienna Airport comprises bus services to the Vienna Schwedenplatz (20 minutes), the Südbahnhof rail station (25 minutes) and the Westbahnhof rail station (35 minutes). A City Airport Train (CAT) service also connects Vienna city centre, along with S-Bahn trains, with ticket machines available on the relevant platforms. However, many people prefer the convenience of taxis, which are located on the northern side of the Arrivals Hall, although others favour the various well-known car rental firms. Nearby main roads include the A22 and A23 motorways.
About Vienna Tourism
As a popular tourist destination, visitors come to Austria's capital city of Vienna for many reasons, including the city's museums, its magnificent architecture and the depth of its history. Architecture is one of the city's most noteworthy attractions and buildings such as the Imperial Palace and the BurgKappelle are amongst Vienna's most famous and impressive.
The many sights within this World Heritage city are just a short drive from Vienna International Airport (VIE). These include the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Sigmund Freud Museum, both of which make for an interesting visit, while any of the city's lush parklands, such as the Stadtpark and the Volksgarten, make an ideal destination for relaxing and escaping from the urban jungle. Of particular interest, Vienna is home to the world's oldest zoo, the Tiergarten Schönbrunn. Vienna apartments, hotels and lodgings are all available in and around the airport.
